Ryan Day entered 2023 as his sixth season as the Buckeyes head coach, taking over after a seven-year campaign by Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes and Day promoted Brian Hartline to offensive coordinator from wide receivers coach this season. Jim Knowles, who will need to earn back the trust of fans after allowing 45 points to Michigan last season, will be the team's defensive coordinator. The most interesting aspect of this team is its offense. Kyle McCord, who started one game with C.J. Stroud out in 2021, is the starter, but he had just six touchdowns through the team's first four games. The team returned its top four receiving weapons, but none are more potent than Marvin Harrison Jr., who ended last season with 1,263 receiving yards. The Fighting Irish were led by coach Marcus Freeman, who is in his second season with the program. He lost his first two games last season but ended the season on a strong note. The additions to the Fighting Irish defense were notable. They have nine starters that have been with the program and then added two graduate transfers, defensive end Jean-Baptiste and nickel corner Thomas Harper. Notre Dame had the poise, experience, pressure and patience to cause trouble for the Buckeyes, and they did just that.
It was RB TreVeyon Henderson that really showed out, ending the game with 104 rushing yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. He was the Buckeyes' savior in their first top-10 matchup of the season. Before the game, we noted to expect a 1-7-point loss for Notre Dame, which ultimately came to fruition.
