What Are the Odds Julian Sayin Wins the Heisman Trophy? (Week 9)

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin has +400 odds to win the Heisman Trophy at Ohio sports betting sites. Take a look at where he stands compared to others on the short list.

PlayerOdds
🏆 Julian Sayin (Ohio State)+175
Fernando Mendoza (Indiana)+220
Ty Simpson (Alabama)+350
Marcel Reed (Texas A&M)+650
Gunner Stockton (Georgia)+2500
Jeremiah Smith (Ohio State)+4000

Where Sayin Stands Right Now

Sayin is the favorite to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy.

After posting 300+ passing yards in three of his last four contests, his odds improved to around +175 at several sportsbooks, including bet365 Sportsbook Ohio.

He is firmly in the mix to win the Heisman. Based on the current odds, four quarterbacks take up more than 90% of the market share and none took a bigger leap over the last two weeks than Sayin. He sits as the favorite on the list, with the three closest contenders being Sayin, Fernando Mendoza, and Ty Simpson.

How the Odds Compare to Other Heisman Candidates

Obviously, as the favorite, Sayin leads the way. He was pushing the narrow lead for junior quarterbacks Ty Simpson (Alabama) and Fernando Mendoza (Indiana) all season. After a win over Penn State last week, Sayin leaped them both.

The only other serious contender right now is QB Marcel Reed (Texas A&M) at +650. The next closest after him is Gunner Stockton (UGA) at a distant +2500.

Market Factors Influencing His Price

Several core factors are driving the rise in Julian Sayin Heisman odds:

  • Efficiency and production: Through seven games, Sayin’s near-80 % completion rate and 19 TD-to-3 INT line are elite for any player – especially a freshman.
  • Team performance: Ohio State is No. 1 in the country. He's got all the spotlight a Heisman Trophy requires, which can be good or bad depending on how the next few weeks go.
  • Quarterback premium: Historically, QBs dominate the Heisman field – 7 of the last 10 winners were quarterbacks.
  • Momentum and narrative: His recent breakout game against Wisconsin (36/42, 393 yards, 4 TDs) served as a statement, but he will need more.

While there is no shortage of competition in the Big Ten, Ohio State gets an ice-cold Penn State team off a bye at home and hosts surging UCLA. The only legitimate worry left on the Buckeyes' schedule is a trip to Ann Arbor, where they haven't won since 2019.

Ultimately, Sayin needs to beat Michigan to win the Heisman. On top of that, he'll need to beat Indiana in a potential Big Ten Championship to overcome Mendoza's bid.

It's no easy road, but as the old saying goes: Keep winning and the rest figures itself out.

How Sayin Can Win the Heisman Trophy

Sayin offers a strong campaign for a Heisman run. As a redshirt freshman, he commands a loaded Ohio State offense with poise and precision. His gaudy numbers through seven games are impressive regardless of his youth. He's also getting better every week, with 300+ passing yards in three of his last five games.

But what will it take to win it?

A Generational Wide Receiver Room

With an other-worldly wide receiver room, Sayin will get help every week from his favorite targets: Jeremiah Smith & Carnell Tate.

Nearly 65% of Sayin's passing yards – and 16 of his 23 passing touchdowns – have landed in Smith or Tate's hands, so their impact cannot be overstated.

An Undefeated Start with A Weak Remaining Schedule

Nothing helps a quarterback look good quite like a zero in the loss column, and that's what Sayin's had all year at No. 1 Ohio State.

While there's only one ranked team remaining on their schedule – No. 25 Michigan in the final game of the regular season – the Buckeyes already rank atop the polls.

They're also one of only five undefeated Power Four teams remaining in college football.

In a position where strength of schedule is irrelevant, Ohio State lucks out with a schedule that avoids in-conference No. 2 Indiana and No. 6 Oregon until a potential matchup in the Big Ten Championship.

Winning the Michigan Game and Big Ten Championship

As long as Ohio State doesn't slip up over the next four weeks, they'll head to Ann Arbor 11-0 and likely still No. 1 nationally.

With a 6-0-1 record against the spread in 2025, it's hard to see the Buckeyes losing outirght as favorites. They've controlled every game with relative ease, and first-year offensive coordinator Brian Hartline hasn't pressed the gas much at all with his dynamic offense.

Perhaps that's by design to impact future opponents? While Sayin has performances impressive enough to land in the Heisman odds, he's had games where 450+ passing yards are for the taking. Still, Ohio State's play caller chooses to run the ball in passing downs and play ball control.

Unless Simpson begins lighting the world on fire for Alabama and wins out, then it likely comes down to Sayin vs. Mendoza in the Big Ten Championship.

The most recent Buckeye to win the Heisman Trophy was Troy Smith in 2006.

As a senior, the quarterback led Ohio State to an undefeated regular season, throwing for over 2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns while guiding the team to a national title appearance. Smith’s poise and leadership made him the seventh Heisman winner in program history.

Of course, the only difference is Sayin is a freshman and Smith was a senior, making the California native's 2025 performance all the more impressive.
