Which Car Brand Is Most-Searched in Ohio?

Fact Checked by Pat McLoone

The vehicle market has undergone a bit of a changing of the guard in recent years, with consumers becoming more focused on safety, fuel efficiency and more. Smaller vehicles, electric vehicles, partially electric vehicles have joined bulkier, less efficient options at the top of people’s wish lists.

BetOhio.com took a break from Ohio sports betting coverage to see exactly which car brands are most popular across the United States, with an emphasis on which types of vehicle are most popular in each state

We did this by using carlogs.org as a starting point to find the 50 most popular car brands, and then using Google Trends to search each car brand to see the highest level of interest in each state for the brand.

After completing the trends for a 12-month cycle from July 25, 2022 to July 25, 2023, we were able to average out the results to get the top car brand for each state.

Ohio Stands Alone with Kia

While much of the country went towards Honda, Ohioans zagged and were the only state to pick Kia as their favorite type of vehicle.

Honda dominated the rankings with seven states considering it to be their favorite brand, no doubt aided by the popularity of the Accord and Civic, which rank No. 1 and No. 3 in the entire country for cars.

With their affordability and reliability, it’s no surprise that they anchored the brand to the top spot. Citizens in Alaska, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina all ranked it at the top of their searches.

In Ohio, Kia reigned supreme. Of the 782 Kia dealerships in the country, 34 are in Ohio, good for 4% of all dealerships. California ranks at the top with 64, but when factoring in population Ohio has many more dealerships per capita, with just over 340,000 people per dealership.

The Kia Sportage has been flying up sales lists over the past year, as numbers have skyrocketed on the affordable SUV. The Sportage has great performance and excellent safety features, making it a top choice for any demographic.

The Kia Forte checks in as their top selling car, with the Telluride being the choice for those looking for a bigger SUV option.

With their rapidly growing popularity now giving Kia one state that prefers them over all other options, no one would be surprised to see the South Korean automaker land at or near the top of a few more states lists in the coming years.

Kia has found a way to make their vehicles affordable yet desirable and appear willing to look at the hybrid and electric model as well. With their wide variety of options, Ohio looks to be a trend-setter in what will be a popular vehicle brand country-wide in no time at all.
