Record in October Among Big 10 Coaches Can Be Like Night and Day

Coming off an emotional road victory at Notre Dame last Saturday, fourth-ranked Ohio State heads into a bye week. Considering the record of coach Ryan Day in October, Buckeyes fans should be at ease heading into next month.

Day Unbeaten and No. 1 . . . in October

Day tops the Big 10 October coaching ranks with a clean 13-0 (1.000) record. Wisconsin's Luke Fickell (18-7, .720) and Michigan's Jim Harbaugh (31-13, .705) are ranked 2-3. Iowa's Kirk Ferentz (49-40, .551), ranked No. 8, tops the list with the most wins in the month.

The Buckeyes kick off the month at home vs. Maryland Oct. 7 (FOX, noon). Ohio State sports an 8-0 all-time record against the Terrapins, including a 43-30 road win last year. The first road test of the month will be at Purdue Oct. 14. The Buckeyes hold a 16-5 all-time advantage against the Boilermakers, highlighted by a 59-31 home win on Nov. 13, 2021 in their last meeting. A huge home showdown with Penn State follows on Saturday, Oct. 21. Ohio State has won six consecutive games and nine of their last 10 games against the Nittany Lions, including a 44-31 road win on Oct. 29 last season. The Buckeyes, who hold a 22-8 all-time record against Penn State, are also 13-2 at home.

The end of the month concludes with a road trip to Wisconsin Oct. 28 in a matchup of the top two October coaches, Day and Fickell. Advantage Ohio State, which has won nine straight, 12 of last 13, against Wisconsin, including a 52-21 rout at home last season.

As of Tuesday morning at BetMGM Ohio, the Buckeyes’ over/under regular season win total is at 10.5 games. Ohio State is the second favorite at BetMGM to win the Big 10 title at +210, behind Michigan's +160, and is tied for fourth favorite with Texas at +900 to win the national championship.
