Top 5 Fan-Favorite Players on the 2022-23 Cleveland Cavaliers
Sentiment For Homegrown Talent
It’s not surprising that two homegrown, first-round picks of the Cavaliers are the top two fan favorites among Cleveland fans.
Guard Darius Garland and forward Evan Mobley combined for 61.7% of the total vote. The duo helped Cleveland finish 44-38 last season, the franchise’s first winning season across Ohio betting apps without LeBron James on the roster since 1998.
Garland, the fifth overall pick to Cleveland in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Vanderbilt, has averaged 17.3 points and 6.3 assists per game in his three-plus seasons. He made his first All-Star game last season after posting career-highs in points (21.7), assists (8.6) and steals (1.3) per game.
Mobley was the third overall pick to the Cavaliers in the 2021 NBA Draft out of USC and made an immediate impact on the floor. He was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie team after averaging 15 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 blocks per game.
Over at DraftKings Ohio, Garland (+30000) and Mobley (+25000) are both long-shots to win the regular season MVP award.
All About Expectations For Mitchell
Center Jarrett Allen was the only other Cavalier to garner a double-digit percentage of the vote, finishing third among the fan-favorites. Allen, in his third season with the Cavaliers, was acquired in a four-team trade in January 2021 and agreed to a five-year, $100 million rookie contract extension seven months later.
Allen has averaged a double-double (14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds) per game in 110 career contests with the Cavaliers over the last two-plus seasons. He was a first-time All-Star selection last season.
At FanDuel Ohio, Allen is +2900 to win Defensive Player of the Year.
Guard Donovan Mitchell could become one of the top fan-favorites on the Cavaliers if he meets the expectations fans have for him after he was acquired in September in a mega trade. Mitchell was an All-Star each of the last three seasons with the Utah Jazz. He has already helped bolster this year's squad to a 5-1 start.
Where's The Love?
Forwards Cedi Osman and Kevin Love were tied for fifth in the fan vote. Osman has averaged double-digit points per game in each of the last four seasons with the Cavaliers.
Love, a five-time NBA All-Star, is the second-oldest player on the roster (Robin Lopez) and the only Cavalier remaining from the 2016 NBA Championship team. Love ranks in the Top-10 in franchise history in points (7,344) and rebounds (4,239) and second in 3-pointers made (1,034).
A foot injury caused Love to play in only 22 games in 2019 and a calf injury led to Love playing in just 25 contests in 2021. Love did return in 2022 and played in 74 games. But he logged a career-low 22.5 minutes per game, though he did average 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
